31 Days of Horror Challenge

Day 7 - a horror movie you think no one has seen

Detention - 2011

I have several in mind but this is one of them and its more of a comedy horror than horror complete with a major and “didnt even see that one coming” plot twist towards the end.

Starring Dane Cook and Josh Hutcherson in pre-game Hunger Games mode and directed by MTV’s music video God Joseph Kahn. Extremely better than his first project Torque.

The film opens up with a character already breaking the 4th wall and giving you a guide of how not to be a total reject. You think this movie already going to start off with a Mean Girl and then it just surprises you by being the first kill within the first 5 minutes of the movie by a guy dressed as Cinderhella. A serial killer from a fictional horror movie within the movie. Think of the Stab movies in the Scream franchise. Already starts off with a parody of other horror movies so you think it wont be taken seriously. With the exception of the whole serial killer now on the loose and chopping off high schoolers with an axe.

The movie takes a toll and a plot twist at that as it derives to the science fiction genre. Told you not to take it serious. Complete with pop culture and geek references as well as a Time Machine. A FREAKIN TIME MACHINE IN A HORROR COMEDY!

NGL, the time machine is what sold me in the first place. Its a must watch if you’re feeling nolstagic and dont want to take any horror movie seriously.

Rhine River Cruise Day 3 (December 16th, 2024)

Today was a lovely day! Unfortunately, neither Liz nor I slept all that well last night. I slept for a couple of hours, but once the unisom wore off, I was kept waking up. I’m kept going back to sleep and then waking up and I’m pretty sure I was wide awake by 5:30 AM. Liz slept for a total of maybe three hours last night. That wind up actually getting out of bed around eight in the morning and getting ready for the day and having breakfast in the hotel. I I forgot to include in my blog post from yesterday that I straightened my hair with an adapter at the end of it. And the adapter got stuck in the plug in the bathroom. And I ended up having to ask for hotel maintenance to bring their pliers to pull it out of the wall. Super embarrassing. Did not stick the adapter back in the wall after that. After breakfast, we finished packing up all of our stuff and left it outside of our room. The hotel Porter came to pick up our stuff and store it for the day until we were going to leave for Basel. 

There were five of us from the group that signed up for the Mount Titlis tour. A giant bus came to pick the five of us up with our tour guide to drive us about 40 minutes to Engelberg. This means angel city. It was a stunning drive through the Swiss countryside over to the base of the mountain. Landscape is still just so green and it’s green all the way up the mountain until the snow line. It was absolutely fascinating. Once we got to the base in the mountain, we were already passed the snow line. I was a little bit worried about it being very cold at the top of 10,000 feet. So we had brought all of the layers. We hopped out of the bus and we hopped onto our first gondola ride. We rode the gondola about 2/3 of the mountain and then switched into something called a rotair. Which was a spinning gondola. This spun 360° very slowly so that it didn’t matter what side of the gondola you were on you could see views of every direction. We then made it to 10,000 feet and it was an absolutely stunning day. The guide kept saying how lucky we were to visit on a day like that. We could see 4 miles in each direction and there were no clouds. It was absolutely beautiful to be at a very high mountain in the middle of the Swiss Alps. It’s also a ski resort. So we saw lots of skiers and snowboarders. We also saw some paragliders, which was really fascinating. We went outside and took a lot of pictures. It wasn’t nearly as cold as I thought it was going to be. Particularly because we were standing in the sun and there wasn’t much wind. I ended up having to takeoff one of my four layers. We then walked over to the highest suspension bridge in Europe. And we crossed this see-through bottom suspension bridge 150 feet to the other side and then back. It actually wasn’t as scary as I thought it was going to be. but it did do a lot of swinging back-and-forth when people were walking really fast. We got lots of fun pictures and enjoyed the stunning views. After that, we then headed inside for lunch and had a beautiful view of the Swiss Alps while we were eating. Both Liz and I had goulash for lunch. Unfortunately, I managed to get it on my scarf and my sweatshirt. So the end of my sweatshirt is a little orange. And I tried to wash my sweatshirt in the sink when I got to the boat today. We will see if the stain comes out. After lunch, we walked into a cave drilled into the middle of an ancient glacier. That was pretty neat. They also had some ice sculptures in the cave as well. We then walked to the souvenir shop and then headed back down the mountain. We then took the 40 minute bus ride back through the countryside to Lucerne to pick up the rest of the people from Viking, who were going to be on our boat that did not join us for the tour today. We made sure that our luggage made it onto the bus and took a bathroom break, but then we headed out for Basel. I really enjoyed our time in Lucerne. Switzerland is very beautiful. There are lots of random Christmas trees out in public and random places and almost every business has an advent wreath. Everybody here is very nice. And a lot of people speak English, which was helpful. The Christmas markets are not super grand at least in Lucerne. But it’s still a very beautiful country. I would definitely love to come back.

The bus ride took us about an hour and a half to get from Lucerne to our ship in Basel. We got to the ship at around 5 PM. Because we got here so late we didn’t have time to explore the city or the Christmas markets here at all. But that’s OK cause we’re going to see so many great Christmas markets on this trip. Once we checked in, we got our luggage and unpacked in our room. We then had a safety drill. We also learned about that amenities on board and a port for tomorrow. We then headed into the restaurant for a lovely dinner. We sat with the most interesting couple at dinner. It was an older gentleman in his 60s from Australia and his 28 year-old Australian girlfriend. He owns some sort of billboard advertising business in Australia and is into a lot of different business adventures. It was quite the interesting dinner conversation. And I tried to beat and feta quinoa salad. We also had a spinach, ricotta ravioli. And dessert was a plum cake. Dinner ended up taking about two hours. During dinner the boat also went through the first lock so that was cool to watch. We are now in our room getting ready for bed. Both of us are exhausted after the full day today and not having had much sleep last night. Tomorrow will be another full day. Our excursion tomorrow will be about eight hours. But we’re both very excited.

Caroline breathed out a sigh of relief as she stepped into the pleasantly heated lobby of the lodge, the biting cold that had been pricking at her cheeks disappearing as the door shut behind her. Katherine had convinced them to go all out on the accommodations, the pandemic waning out just before their final year of college meaning they'd all saved up the itch to have a swanky, wild getaway with no holds barred after two and a half years of Zoom school and staying indoors, and they'd selected a resort with luxuriously decorated logged cabins and a access to a wide variety of winter activities. She'd nearly turned it down, worried that they'd get snowed in and she'd miss a flight home for Christmas with her mom, but Liz had convinced her to sign on at the last minute after she'd gotten roped into working on Christmas. Their wider group of friends had all signed on eagerly as well, and Caroline was looking forward to a week of snowy coziness, especially since a certain someone had declined his invitation.

Her flight had been the first one of the girls' scheduled to come in, so she was the first one there by a few hours, and it was her job to get them all set up at the cabin. Her suitcase rolled on the marble floor behind her as she approached the well-groomed man at the front desk, who greeted her with a polite smile, his gloved fingers tapping at the keyboard as he confirmed her reservation and reached into a drawer to hand her a room key to the cabin she'd rented with her friends. "Though you of course have a small kitchen in your cabin, we do offer complimentary coffee, hot chocolate, and pastries in the main hall every morning. Your reservation comes with one free ski lesson for each guest, and access to the skiing and snowboarding area for your entire stay, as well as the gondolas and sleigh rides if you prefer more low key activities. We have a free shuttle to downtown that leaves once an hour, and I'm happy to provide restaurant or wine tasting recommendations, should you require them," the front desk worker said, handing her a glossy brochure that showed smiling families engaging in a variety of snow-related activities.

She stiffened when she heard a familiar laugh from the other side of the lobby, and turned away from the man at the front desk to look in the direction, grimacing when she saw the familiar face. A fire crackled merrily in the hearth on the far side of the lobby surrounded by plush armchairs and couches, and on one of those couches sat the most unpleasant person Caroline had ever met in her whole entire life, and she'd met some truly unpleasant people. Klaus Mikaelson was arrogant, condescending, snobby, and completely insufferable. He made fun of her coffee orders, mocked her taste in music, and challenged every single thing she said that he could find to argue with, his eyes infuriatingly alight whenever he got the chance to prove her wrong. He had texted her an article from The New York Times about how people who said 'like' in the middle of sentences were less likely to get hired at jobs out of "concern." He was an asshole.

He'd also made her come three times in one night when they both got drunk at the exclusive everyone-got-tested-first-and-had-to-present-verified-documentation New Years' bash she'd thrown the year before, and Caroline hadn't been able to stop thinking about it since.

And, worse, judging by his smug smirks and his eyes constantly lingering on her legs for what she tried to convince herself was entirely too long far too often while she feigned offense, she had a feeling he knew it.

What the fuck was he doing there? Katherine had told her Klaus had opted out!

"You and your other guests will be in Cabin Six, which is out that door and down the path to the left. Would you like me to call a bellhop to assist you with your luggage and show you the way?"

"Um--" she began, freezing when Enzo, one of the only traitorous friends she kept in her life despite also being friends with Dimpled Satan called her name from by the fireplace. "No. I can find my way on my own, I guess."

The front desk man smiled. "I do hope you enjoy your stay here."

"Thank you," Caroline said politely, taking the envelope that held the key cards to the cabin and turning to reluctantly head over to the group of boys who had already arrived. "What are you doing here?" she asked Klaus without preamble, ignoring Enzo's pout at his lack of greeting.

"I'm on vacation, love. Same as you."

"Katherine said you weren't coming," Caroline protested, trying to sound annoyed.

"I reconsidered and decided it wasn't to be missed," Klaus said with a dimpled grin. Caroline scowled.

"After he saw the finalized guest list of course," Kol drawled from beside him, his smirk not dampened by Klaus's glare.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Caroline asked, frowning.

"Never you mind, sweetheart."

"I told you not to call me that like, a million times. It's condescending."

"My apologies, Caroline," Klaus said, her name rolling off his tongue in a way that made her shiver. She reached up to loosen her scarf. It was weirdly hot in the lobby. "I'll be sure to address you as you wish."

"Thanks," she said curtly with a toss of her hair. "Well, I'm going to go settle down in the cabin, I guess. Kat's the last one getting in, but she said she'd meet us in town for dinner, and I checked the schedule and we could take the six o'clock shuttle," Caroline said, her tone businesslike. "If you're coming to dinner, I guess I'll meet you back here then."

"See you then, gorgeous," Enzo said with a grin.

"Yep," Caroline said dryly, turning and bracing herself for the cold outdoors again as she headed to the cabin, hauling her giant suitcase through the snow and already starting to breathe hard.

Klaus being here would probably suck, but she'd make the best of it. Sure, he could be annoying and distracting and liked to rile her up for a laugh, but maybe she could avoid him. She'd been mostly successfully doing it since the party the year before, despite his occasional attempts to catch her in the right place. It seemed her luck had run out. She'd just try to find winter activities he wouldn't be caught dead doing. He was probably going to do something pretentious like wine tasting or take walks to work on his photography portfolio for his minor, and she was totally happy to avoid both of those things. She'd just have hot chocolate while she read romance novels or watched Netflix in the resort lounge, or go swimming in the heated indoor pool, or spend time at the luxurious spa. She wouldn't even know Klaus was there.

After all, it's not like he'd come on the trip because she had changed her mind and decided to come at the last minute. He probably had better things to do than bother her. She hoped.

Klaus or not, this vacation was totally going to kick ass. She'd make sure of it.

Thank you! 💜 sorry this took a little bit some of these i had to think about for Rae cause i forgot i haven’t fully developed her yet lmao. 

💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

Liz - That would be anger. When she gets angry or annoyed and can’t let it out she has no idea what to do and that in turn makes her 10x worse to be around. She’ll snap at people, instigate people, anything to deal with her anger. Let’s just say Soap was very happy when they rescued Price from the gulag. 

Rae - Being energized. If she’s not out on a mission with Team Metal or doing something with her brother she feels antsy. Rae is very athletic and likes to be out and about, but being stuck on base with not much to do can prove difficult. It got to the point where her and Derek would spar when not on duty, just to get her energy out. They became good friends because of it.  

Maria - For her it would be sadness. Even before Mother Miranda she had trouble dealing with her sadness. Crying didn’t help that much, wallowing in her sorrows didn’t help, it felt like she just had to ride out her sadness and hope to see brighter days. 

🙉 HEAR-NO-EVIL - what is the worse thing your oc could hear from someone? 

Liz - She’s been through a lot and with her job not much would actually be the ‘worse thing she could hear’ per se. With that being said the one thing she cares about is her family, Ghost and their kids are her world if anything happened to them she wouldn’t know what to do. So hearing a doctor say any of them are terminally ill would break her heart, especially if it was one of the kids. Also hearing if Logan was K.I.A would be up there as well considering he’s the only one from her family she still talks to. 

Rae - That her brother didn’t make it. Her and Julian are twins, inseparable at that. They grew up together, joined the Army and Delta together, they’ve been through so much together and for her to lose someone she’s so close with would devastate her. 

Maria - That there’s no escape from Mother Miranda (which ended up being false in the long run thanks to Ethan). Being taken from her home, from her family sucked and she hated being there, she just wanted out. 

🌱 SEEDLING - what is their most vivid memory from childhood?

Liz - That one time when the family went up to Big Bear Lake for some snowboarding/sledding and ended with both Liz and Logan launching themselves off their sled cause they ended up going down the kill a little too fast. Both of them were fine of course, they just couldn’t stop laughing and it’s one memory Liz still cherishes to this day and can picture so vividly. 

Rae - Looking back on her life the one of many vivid memories she has is just playing in the backyard with Julian. Them running around, playing on the jungle gym, swinging on the swings, jumping through the sprinkler. Just being kids and laughing. 

Maria - When she was younger she would go on hikes with her parents on Cascada Urlatoarele to see the waterfalls. One time when she was around (7) years of age she decided to run down a hill to beat her parents and ended up tripping on a rock and broke her ankle. Her father carried her down the rest of the way and even though her ankle was throbbing and in pain she enjoyed every minute. 

🔫 PISTOL - do they trust people easily? how easily will they turn their back to someone? have they been backstabbed before? will they betray someone if given an ultimatum?

Liz - No, she’s not someone to trust people easily and can you blame her? If you’re in her inner circle she’ll never turn her back to them, everyone else though? Yeah she’ll do it without a second thought. Have they ever been backstabbed before? From the wise words of Price ‘you have to trust someone to be betrayed, I never did’. All depends on the ultimatum and who she’s gonna betray. If it’s people she’s close with than no. Her father and brother, oh hell yeah she’ll do that in an instant. As long as Rorke, Merrick and Keegan don’t get hurt because of it. She likes them. 

Rae - She doesn’t trust people at first, she has to get to know them to make that assessment. Turning her back to people isn’t something she would do unless absolutely necessary. No, she hasn’t been backstabbed before which she’s thankful for. She would never betray anyone no matter how much she might not like them, ultimatum or not. 

Maria - When she was younger, yes she did. Older Maria, no. She’s not one to turn her back away from someone easily, she’ll give them a few chances before she finally does. Have they ever been backstabbed? I would say no, she expects half the stuff that happened anyways so she wasn’t surprised. Yes, she would betray someone if given the ultimatum. 

💚 GREEN HEART - what things make your oc feel comforted? hugs, kisses, food?

Liz - Cuddling with her favorite person, alcohol and some cookies. 

Rae - Hugs, cheesy jokes told by her brother to make her laugh and their mom’s homemade lasagna. 

Maria - Baking, forehead kisses and a ton of cornete boieresti (boyar cones)

powers/special abilities —

GENIUS INTELLIGENCE: his intellect is so high that it surpasses even that of his own father. MASTER ENGINEER MASTER INVENTOR HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT: he’s more equipped to fight while in the air on his glider but has been known to hold his own when his feet are on the ground too. EXPERT SWORDSMAN → He might be Human but Harry has created all of his gear himself. He designed the armor worn when he puts it on. Which might not be often as other heroes but his glider is usually always with him. → He enhanced some of his footwear (usually his boots) to form a glider under his feet whenever signaled to materialize it. This kind of resembles a snowboard but smaller. Harry can turn it on and off whenever he wants to — making it easy to get away from any situation. → His Hobgoblin suit is a bright orange with a hood and when pulled over his head will materialize a mask to cover his face. → His main weapon to use is his flame sword — a handle that emits a fire in the shape of a blade when turned on.  There are also smoke bombs carried with him when he goes out somewhere.

three headcanons —

Harry has some windows that can open from the outside installed in his office at Oscorp and also in his penthouse. They’re specifically for his best friend to use because Harry knows Peter prefers not using the front door when stepping in for a visit.  (This was discussed with Amanda!)

Growing up Norman paid more attention to his work and evil schemes than anything Harry was succeeding in. He would try talking to him about his day and be told ‘if this isn’t important it can wait, son.’ Sometimes Harry would act out and throw parties at their penthouse when he would be ignored. His way of saying ‘hey look at me! i’m here!’ Although it never quite worked to get him the recognition he deserved from his father. The parties never made him feel better from his experience.

He had a new assistant who takes her job quite seriously when it comes to managing Harry’s day-to-day. While he appreciates her dedication, sometimes wishes that she would allow herself some time to relax. He has also learned that his assistant isn’t fond of random visits they aren’t on the schedule. Harry tried to tell her that it’s quite alright and to move things around ... which doesn’t go over well.   Sometimes Harry just wants to sneak into his lab and keep his hands busy but his assistant has to always show up with reminders of his meetings and any other boring adult responsibilities. Why did he hire an assistant? Usually a question Harry asks himself quite often.

four personality traits —

+ ARDENT (Harry is passionate about everything that he tends to do in his life. Whether it’s protecting his friends, diving into creating an invention for himself or another hero, sitting in on one of his many meetings, and whatever else falls in between. He always puts a hundred percent into everything that he puts his mind to! Passion is everything to him.)

- PERTINACIOUS (Always determined and when faced with opposition will just encourage Harry to keep going. If you tell him ‘no’ he will do it anyway. This applies in all aspects of his life. People didn’t think a teenager could be the face of the company but Harry continued on despite that discouragement. He likes to prove people wrong so maybe that’s the reason behind his choices. It doesn’t always work out in his favor, forgetting that he’s only Human when trying to take in a dangerous for alone. Which results in injury for being so stubborn.)

+ VERACIOUS (You can always count on Harry to tell it like it is. He prefers honesty from those that are close to him.  Which means in most situations he’ll tell people how he feels in the moment.)

- SHOW-OFF. (Harry tends to try impressing people with what he’s capable of doing. His father never appreciated his talents so he tries  to show off his inventions to anyone who would pay attention. He tries not to be conceited but sometimes it can come off that way to strangers.)

character bio —

When the start of the ban had begun Harry was only seventeen years old. He became a superhero of his own design a few months before it became law and would call himself the Hobgoblin. His father had these plans for his son to carry on his vision of destroying the Spider-Man and anyone else that stood in their way. However, this isn’t how Harry wanted to use the technology he designed. The suit of armor and weapons were his own and wouldn’t allow them to turned against someone that was starting to become a friend. Harry hasn’t always been fond of Spider-Man at the time and often wondered why he was always poking around his business. After some time his mind had been changed and it inspired him to become a hero too. He didn’t care if Norman didn’t agree but Harry was proud of his decision.

He was a genius in every sense of the word, despite being a little foolish sometimes. Harry is far from perfect but has always kept his identity a secret. He couldn’t risk the public finding out considering his status as an Osborn. Eventually he would learn that his best friend is the web-head.

Fast forward a year to sometime after Harry’s eighteenth birthday ... there’s an accident and Norman is transformed into something else. He becomes the Green Goblin and no longer resembles the father that Harry once knew.  He struggles with accepting this but isn’t given the proper time to let it settle in before everything about his life changes. While Norman is missing and living the life of a super-villain, his son takes on new responsibilities.

Harry becomes the CEO of Oscorp Industries just a few months after turning eighteen. It was an adjustment for everyone because while there are some similarities between the two — he was a very different boss than his father had been. Maybe it was the fact Harry is a hero and not the bad guy ... which affects the priorities of the company. He tries not to worry about what his father is up to and tries his best over the years.

Harry is careful whenever going out as Hobgoblin, not making a habit of it being an everyday thing since there’s a ban on such activities. He can’t ever stand by and do nothing though because sometimes doing the right thing is more important. He doesn’t typically go on patrols either. Harry has been able to keep his identity a secret all these years.

Oscorp started building a new branch in Star City and Harry would relocate there to oversee it once opening up for business. He moves into a penthouse nearby to be close with his work. Harry doesn’t quite know what he’s in for, even after doing his research. I felt so nervous. Today was a big deal. It wasn't just Bruce's birthday, at least for me. Today has the potential to change my life. I've been incredibly anxious all day long, and now, it's go time.

Once I was done getting ready, I pulled Bruce's present out of its hiding place and walked out to the living room. Everyone but Bruce was there, waiting on him. I walked up to Steve, putting my arm around his waist as he kissed the top of my head. “Hey baby. You bring your present?” he asked. I nodded and held it up.

“Yep. Got it right here. I just want y'all to know,” I spoke up, grabbing everyone's attention, “that my gift is going to out-do all of yours, so don't feel bad.” There were ‘haha’s or ‘whatever’s in response.

“Dr. Banner is on his way here in the elevator,” F.R.I.D.A.Y announced. We all stood quietly, waiting for him to arrive. The doors opened and Bruce stepped out, slowly walking over to where we were assembled.

“Uh...good evening. Something I should know about?” he asked warily. We all laughed before Tony walked forward and handed him an envelope.

“Happy Birthday Bruce. We all got you something, and we're all going out for dinner tonight, in your honor.” Bruce smiled before opening his gift.

“You guys don't have to do that. A trip to Bora Bora? Thanks Tony.” The men embraced before Natasha and Sam walked up with their gift. “A bottle of the finest vodka and the finest bourbon. Thanks guys.”

One by one everyone gave Bruce their gift. Thor also gave him liquor, but it was for ‘the other guy’. Rhodey and Sam got Bruce snowboarding lessons and a chance to go skydiving. Wanda and Vision went in together and got him a full hour massage session. Steve, Bucky and Alice booked Bruce some time at a local boxing gym, their services included. Clint gave him a stress free weekend at his farm, along with pictures drawn by Clint’s kids. Finally, it was my turn.

“Alright everyone, glad y'all saved the best for last,” I joked as I stepped forward. Everyone laughed as I handed the present to Bruce, my heart racing and hands trembling slightly. He chuckled before pulling the wrapping paper off and opening the box. He paused as he read the front of the document inside, before he hurriedly sat on the nearby couch. My heart jumped up into my throat as he read more of the paperwork. After a moment, he glanced up at me, eyes brimming with tears.

“Is this for real?” He asked shakily. I nodded, sniffling as I tried to keep my own tears at bay. He looked back at the papers and smiled the biggest smile I've ever seen. He stood up and grabbed me in a bear hug. I hugged him back and we stood there, the rest of the team sharing puzzled looks. After a while, we broke apart, before Bruce picked up the paperwork and walked over to the bar, looking for a pen.

“Uh Bruce? What's going on? What's in the box?” Tony asked hesitantly. Bruce finally located a pen and began to sign the document, answering Tony as he flipped pages.

“Evie gave me the best gift ever,” he called over his shoulder. He finished signing the last page with a flourish and turned to face everyone. “These are adoption papers. As soon as these are filed, Evie will officially be my daughter.” There was a collective gasp, followed by an ‘aww’ from Wanda.

“That is the sweetest thing I've ever seen,” she cooed. I could see that most of the team didn't understand, so I explained.

“Growing up, I was passed around from relative to relative. By the time I would get settled in, I was dumped onto the next person. I don't remember my real parents, and all I know about them is that I severely cut in on their drug habits.” I looked over at Bruce and smiled fondly. “So, for Bruce to take me under his wing the way he did has meant the world to me. And since he has no children of his own, this is a win-win for both of us.” Nods and murmurs of agreement came from everyone.

“Well, it looks like we have more to celebrate than just Bruce,” Tony declared, clapping his hands. I shook my head as everyone made to board the elevator.

“No this is still just Bruce's day. These won't be official for a while, and that's even if they're approved.” Tony looked put out, and I grinned. “Don't worry Tony. If and when these are approved and certified, we can all celebrate then. Promise.” He smiled at that before motioning for me to enter before him.

Once we were all in, the elevator closed and we descended to the garage. Bucky, Alice, Steve and I all got into my Jeep, and we headed to the restaurant that Tony had reserved for us.

“So adoption?” Steve started. I chuckled before grabbing his hand.

“Yes. I didn't want anyone to know, otherwise I would have told you first.” I didn't think this would bother Steve.

“No it's fine. Just never saw it coming is all.” He squeezed my hand as he followed Tony through the traffic. I could tell he was still tense about something, as he avoided my eyes.

“Just think Steve. Now you have someone you can get permission from,” Bucky pointed out.

“Permission for what?” I asked, turning to stare at him.

“Buck…” Steve warned.

“Bucky, drop it,” Alice chimed in. He grinned at her before turning back to me.

“You're Steve's girlfriend right?” I nodded in confirmation. He snuck a peek at Steve before going on.

“James Buchanan Barnes, shut your fucking mouth before I shut it for you,” Steve growled, their eyes meeting in the rear view mirror. Alice slapped her hand over his mouth in an attempt to shut him up before he went too far, but he was able to lean away and keep talking, smirking at Steve.

“What's the one thing that an old-fashioned guy like Steve would want to ask his girlfriend’s dad for permission to do?” He looked back at Steve to gauge his reaction. I glanced over too, slightly alarmed at what I saw.  

“Steve, relax before you break my car,” I warned. He loosened his grip on my steering wheel before shooting Bucky a death glare. “Take her out? No he's already doing that. Uh…” I trailed off, thinking. “Oh, asking for her hand in mar-” Oh my god. There's no way. Bucky nodded at me knowingly as a literal growl came from Steve. Alice and I made eye contact, worried about the tension between our boys.

We had finally made it to the restaurant parking lot. Steve had barely hit the brakes before Bucky was scrambling out of the door. Steve put the Jeep in park, turned off the engine, unbuckled his seatbelt and turned the lights off, all in a matter of seconds, before he too was out the door and chasing Bucky down. Alice and I slowly made our way to the rest of the group, watching the two super soldiers throw snow at and chase each other.

“What's going on with those two?” Nat asked as we walked up.

“Bucky let loose a secret and Steve's pissed,” Alice replied. Bucky came running back, Steve hot on his tail. I reached out and grabbed my boyfriend's arm, pulling him towards me, as Alice did the same to Bucky.

“Hey, you guys go ahead. I wanna talk to Steve alone,” I told them. He huffed in defeat as everyone walked into the restaurant, flipping Bucky off as he followed them inside.

“Sorry about that. It's been awhile since we played in the snow. We're not huge fans of it anymore,” he apologized, wrapping his arms around me to warm me up.

“It's ok. Look, if he was being serious, then you don't have to ask for permission. I know it's what men did in your day and age, but nowadays it's not something that's routinely practiced.” Steve was staring at the ground, not wanting to look me in the eyes. “The answer will be ‘yes’ regardless if you get permission or not,” I assured him, ducking to catch his eyes. A smile slowly crept over his face as he realized what I meant.

“That's your answer then?”

“Yes.” He swung me around before setting me back on my feet and kissing me. I smiled against his lips before pulling back. “I'm not into having an audience during moments like this, so I'm good if you are. But, if you had something planned out, go for it. My answer won't change.” He smiled before putting his arm around my shoulder and walking into the restaurant.

“It's good to know your answer and that it won't change. I did have something planned but, if you're ok with this then I won't bother.” He look crestfallen at the thought of not being able to get down on one knee.

“No I want you to do it. I can tell you'll be bummed out if you don't get to do it the way you wanted, so please, by all means, do it,” I offered. He laughed and nodded.

“Ok.”

“Besides, we need a ring first,” I pointed out. I glanced up at him and did a double take. He was smiling his wolfy smile again. “You already have it, don't you?” His smile got bigger before the hostess asked our names.

“Oh, we’re with Tony Stark.” She smiled and led us to the table.

You’d think I would vegabond before biofuel, but i just got a craving…. then I got an incling, “maybe these arnt one time phases.” cause now i got another thought, I'm back to the vegabond route, but a more "stay-awhilebond" feelin. House sit, wwooff, work-away when the world alows open travel again. And maybe Do it by bike? As few planes as possible. LIVE in the cities of the world, get to know them, be a part of them. Know the public places, the baker on the courner, where the oldest trees and stairs are.

Homestead. Own Property out right. I will pay for everything up-front, all the money I save on interest by waiting will be trippled by keeping the money invested till there is more then enough for the propert, land and home development. Enough will be left over, and remain invested, to continue growing at a steady, live a comfortable life and travel as I wish, take what ever courses i wish rate.

Raise your kids here, with stability providing safety. Routine creating tradition that will be imprinted in them for ever, every pumpkin pie will make them feel their childhood in fall, and the excitment of starting school again. Let them grow conected to nature and their food. Atleast till 7. Then ask them what they want to do? wanna go to school in the city? wanna live in a bus and travel across the continent? Wanna live in a boat and sail around the world? Please learn another language, spanish is easy and lots of places different to us.

Traversing the continent selling soaps, teas, hot snacks wrapped in bees wax at ski hills, soaking potions, spa days at tree planter camps and tickets to movie nights.

A place with seasons. I don´t want to be hot and itchy all year round. A place where people steward the land, and shape it with Peter Pan’s elegant hands. No generic, shitty, fast food joints, only healthy artisian. Beautiful works of arcitecture harmanizing our day to day with nature. No junk advertisments.

Engelberg – Switzerland’s secret mountain paradise

I’ve been to Switzerland many times over the past decade. My best friend growing up moved to Neuchâtel after college graduation and I’ve been visiting here there ever since.

My very first visit to the Swiss Alps way back when in 2008 in fact sparked a fire in me that has slowly grown into a great love for big mountains and pristine wilderness, and has carried over with me on my move abroad to New Zealand.

In many ways, New Zealand is like Switzerland, just with about a million less people and 5% of their efficient infrastructure. We don’t have mountains villages and elaborate gondolas and certainly don’t have fabulous mountaintop hotels that offer fondue and champagne any time of year – I wish. Though we do have pretty mountains and a perchance for extreme humility.

So what I was getting at was that I’ve been to Switzerland a lot but I often go to the same area of the Alps – the Jungfrau and Interlaken. It’s a region I know and love very well, and with so many layers and hidden gems, you can go back again and again and feel like you’re discovering new spots.

But this last trip over to the land of fantastic cheese and chocolate, I wanted to explore some of the alpine areas I was unfamiliar with.

  Unless you’re even better traveled than I am, or you are a freeride ski nut or you’re from India, you might not have heard of this incredible mountain mecca lorded over by the incredible Mt Titlus. Fair enough.

Probably the most popular freeride center in Switzerland (ie riding on natural un-groomed terrain), Engelberg attracts some of the best skiers and snowboarders around the world to its crazy-ass descents, along with other powder fiends to enjoy the colossal expanse of mountains right on the doorstep.

Why yes, I’ll be back here at some point for a shred. I love winter in Switzerland.

And randomly, Engelberg and Mt Titlus is an incredibly popular backdrop in heaps of Bollywood films. It is the Hollywood almost to Indian travelers. Like, heaps of group tours from India stop here for just one night. They go to Rome, Milan, then Engelberg, before heading off to Paris and then London. So random but cool.

The largest winter and summer holiday destination in Central Switzerland, Engelberg has it all. And even though it can be wildly popular, it has so many little haunts and corners to explore that you can easily feel like you can have the place to yourself.

It was early June when I found myself weaving along the picturesque switchback mountain roads leading up to the town of Engelberg from Lucerne, where I had just been staying. Mists settled on the tops of the peaks but the air was clean and fresh. Delightful.

I was so excited to explore a new part of Switzerland, especially one that I hadn’t heard of before.

The history and charm

Ready to check into the charming and historic Alpenclub in the center of town, my mouth just dropped open when I walked inside. What a cute hotel – it even smells old.

I am such a sucker for historical hotels, something we seriously lack in our modern and new New Zealand, and the alpine old cabin vibe that permeates every inch of Alpenclub wooed me as soon as I walked in the door and got my first whiff of it.

From the wooden walls and floors to the quirky additions to the creaky stairs, I fell in love with this place instantly.

For a really good cup of coffee, something not easily found in Switzerland (why?!), head to Kafikaufbar in Engelberg, a quirky and cute cafe that does good coffee and hot chocolate and local fresh pastries, though I’m fairly certain it’s cash only.

Nearby the other main attraction of the town is the Engelberg Monastery, a benedictine abbey founded in 1120. Nowadays it’s a school but it reminds me of something straight out of the Sound of Music, and it’s the beating heart of Engelberg.

Imagine going here as a kid. Wow.

The mighty Titlus and stunning alpine lakes

But of course the one and only way to experience the best Engelberg has to offer is to head up to the mighty Mt. Titlus which overlooks the town. Sitting high and proper at a whopping 3,238 meters, you can’t miss it.

The mountain is connected from Engelberg through an elaborate system of cable cars which allow you to experience it all however you want. While many chose to go straight up to the very top, it’s well worth taking the time to see what all the mountain has to offer.

It was a moody day when we went hiking around the incredible alpine lake of Trübsee, which is one of the cable car stops on the way up Mt. Titlus.

Often overlooked by those glamoured by the call of the top of Titlus, there are hundreds of kilometers of trails in the area, with something for everyone.

With moody clouds on the horizon and rain threatening, we had the walks around the to ourselves.

Last winter saw heaps of snow in the Swiss Alps and there was still plenty about even in June, which meant that some of the trails were still buried under snow.

But with the late spring and early summer meant that there were plenty of wildflowers dotting the landscape. They even have a dedicated alpine flower trail that you can follow around the mountains.

The weather packed in by the time we made our way to the last stop on the cable car at the top of Titlus above the glacier, and as much as I would have loved to experience the mountain on a sunny day, I don’t mind the rain and gloom.

For me there is something pleasant and comforting about the rain, who knows.

And I love how the mountains look as the peek through the mists and clouds. It makes them seem even bigger and more unattainable to me, and reminds you how little control you have over this wilderness.

The top of Titlus is a winter wonderland and well worth visiting even in the rain, especially in the world’s first rotating gondola. Switzerland, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. You’re ridiculous.

At the top of Titlus, along with restaurants and plenty of activities you can also walk around inside the glacier, and trust me, it never gets old to see people who’ve never walked on snow or ice before slide their way around inside.

You can also walk across Europe’s highest suspension bridge, which I’m told has great views. Ethereal and spooky, it was fairly daunting to walk across it in the clouds.

Oh, and the cheese. All the cheese

I come to Switzerland for two things: cheese and mountains. And Engelberg has both in abundance.

While raclette and fondue are mostly winter delicacies, you can still beg some of the shops and restaurants to serve you them in summer, like at the Cheese Factory, which is connected to the monastery and where you can watch the local cheese being made. Heaven.

How to Write a Badass Professional Bio for Every Platform

Maybe you just got a snazzy new job or a big promotion.

Or maybe you’re about boost your brand with a speaking gig or a blog contribution and your professional bio has gone the way of those tortilla chips in the back of the cabinet (a bit stale).

Either way, it’s time to chain yourself to your keyboard and write something we all dread -- a professional bio.

Writing about yourself isn’t easy. It’s a fine line between cocky and confident and you’re never quite sure when you’ve locked down the totality of your career and passions.

Full transparency: When I started at IMPACT in February, I had to write one of these monsters myself -- and to be honest, I don’t like how it came out:

“Jason is a journalist-turned-marketer passionate about how storytelling and targeted messaging create business-changing content.

As an Account Executive, he is responsible for implementing inbound marketing strategies that help his clients increase brand awareness, generate leads, and acquire new customers.

When he isn’t working, you’ll find Jason reading on the beach, hunting down mono vinyl, and playing guitar.”

I’m going to hit two birds with this post and provide actionable tips and advice that will help put your mind (and mine) at ease so we can write better professional bios.  

After all, this is some of the most important public-facing copy we will ever write. When done right, your bio can help expand your personal brand, build awareness for yourself and your business, or even win you new business.

Upon these words rest the fate of our entire careers.  

Okay, I’m being hyperbolic but you get it; Our bios are an important first impression and we often neglect them because it is uncomfortable to write about ourselves.    

Without further adieu, this is my guide to writing badass bios for every major platform.    

General Tips

Let’s start with some quick things you should, and shouldn’t, do no matter where the bio is going to be posted.

Things you should do:

Pick the Right Point of View

When deciding whether to write your bio in the first (I) or third (Jason Rose) person, the general rule of thumb is to consider who is introducing you.

Meaning, when your bio appears on a company page, you are being introduced by your company so it makes sense to use the third person.

Ditto for conferences or most publications. I know it makes you feel like Kanye West, but unless it’s explicitly requested, get those “I”s out of your bio.

On the other hand, when you are writing a bio for your social media profile, it is better to the use the first person. Here you’re perceived as the “publisher,” so you’re introducing yourself.  

Establish why you’re qualified (but be human)

It’s a tall order, but a good bio establishes your experience and qualifications, but also that you’re a human being complete with a pulse and a personality.

If an AI application could machine-learn how to write your bio by crawling job descriptions — you’re doing something wrong.

Have a human voice and tone that is professional enough to represent you from 9 to 5, but doesn’t completely betray who you are from 7 to 10.       

Even if you’re in a field that is very conservative, use human language and avoid jargon specific to your industry.  

Things you shouldn’t do:

Play Buzzword Bingo

It’s easier to learn from the don'ts than the do’s — so I will fall back on my sword.  

I think my least favorite thing about my bio is the sour note I played with this first sentence.

“Jason is a journalist-turned-marketer passionate about how storytelling and targeted messaging create business-changing content.”

Journalist-turned-marketer is interesting enough and conveys my career path but everything after passionate is a buzzword or a conjunction setting up another buzzword.

That’s not to say buzzwords don’t have their place. After all, they communicate to an audience that you’re in their tribe and have a shared language, but, when we take industry jargon too far, we are just hiding behind it and safely filling space.

It’s better to speak in universal terms that resonate with your community, but could be understood by anyone.  

When possible, break away from buzzwords and you’ll stand out from the sea of sameness.  

Be all tell, no show   

Someone as apparently “passionate about storytelling” as I am should know to follow the most golden of all story rules.

Show, don’t tell.

According to wikipedia, this idiom is credited to Russian playwright Anton Chekhov who said "Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass."

You may be working with fewer characters than Chekhov, but whenever possible don’t tell someone who you are, show them.

Fellow IMPACTer Liz Murphy’s bio is a great example of this.

“As IMPACT's content strategist, Liz does more than wrangle commas. With more than 10 years of editorial and inbound marketing experience, she's obsessed with innovating new ways of creating amazing content that's absurdly useful and effective. (She also works with in-house contributors and clients as an editor, strategist, interviewer, coach, and sometimes therapist.)”  

What a great first note.

I started my bio with a screeching violin and this is Jimmy Page’s first bend in the Stairway to Heaven guitar solo (the moment that song no longer sucks).

Instead of telling you “I’m skilled editorially but can wear many marketing hats” with her first sentence, Liz showed you: “As IMPACT's content strategist, Liz does more than wrangle commas.

Bravo, Liz.    

Make it all about you

How dare you make your bio all about yourself.

Like any great copy, if your bio doesn’t explicitly its intended audience value, it’s dead on arrival.  

Using Liz’s bio once again as an example, “No matter which hat she's wearing, her goal is simple -- to empower organizations and thought leaders to differentiate themselves and drive measurable results through game-changing content.

Throughout her career, Liz has worked with organizations across a wide range of industries -- from cyber security and health care, to government sales and insurance.”

If I’m a business stakeholder reading this bio, I know what’s in it for me.  

Different Copy for Different Platforms

While the tips above are best practices no matter what, bios aren’t one size fits all and each platform has specific constraints and considerations.

Let’s discuss some of the most common and important:

1. The Company/Team Page

The most important thing to keep in mind when writing a professional bio for your company’s collateral is that you want to differentiate yourself, but within the value proposition of your company and in their voice and tone.  

To put it simply, you want to stand out but not too much.  

I think we all agree that consistent messaging is a must for any brand or business, but I still sometimes come across impeccably written websites with a singular voice and tone, until I get to the author bios.

Then, suddenly the organization feels like a collection of individuals, and no matter how interesting they all personally appear to be, they don’t communicate that this business is a united entity focused on providing me the product, solution, or service I sorely need.    

2. Blogs and third-party publications

The best advice I have to offer with blog bios is to ensure that it speaks directly to the subject you are writing about.

Think Aristotle’s ethical appeals. There is no ethos in using the limited inline space of a blog about quantum physics to share that you love to snowboard.

For third-party publications, you’ll usually have to defer to the style prescribed by the editor.

My suggestion: use the bio to sneak in a link back to one of your owned web properties.

Aside from that sweet link juice, this sends users who like your article to somewhere you have complete control of messaging and how they can engage with you.  

3. LinkedIn

LinkedIn caps your bio (called a summary here) at 2,000 characters.

This gives you plenty of real estate to stretch out and write more, but just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Keep it tight and only share as much is necessary to tell your story.

Also, be cognizant of what is visible before the visitor expands the module and clicks <see more>.

If you’re buying the good stuff, chances are no one is going to click show more.

4. Facebook

Unlike LinkedIn, Facebook only gives you 101 characters to share your story.

It does, however, give you the unique option to set your bio as permanent or temporary in 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, or custom increments. These temporary bios keep the information fresh and allow you to describe not just who you are, but what is most exciting in your career right now.  

For many of us, Facebook is largely a platform for our personal relationships, while professional networking activities live on LinkedIn, but if you’re building a personal brand, your Facebook page is an integral asset.

5. Twitter

While I’ve made my feelings about my company bio clear, I actually like my Twitter Bio.  

The constraints (160 characters) and the short-hand of the platform provide the opportunity to get creative. It’s also worth noting that the platform is comparatively much less stuffy than LinkedIn, so feel free to have fun with it.    

Just don’t go full 2014 with MARKETER | WRITER | LOVER OF PANDAS or mention that you like to drink coffee.  

While I haven’t taken advantage, it’s a good idea to hashtag any industry relevant keywords to boost the discoverability of your profile, and don’t forget to @ your company!

6. Instagram 

Instagram bios force you to make due with 150 characters or less.

Like Twitter, make sure you include hashtags that lead to relevant galleries, or @ links that lead to your company’s profile.

The great thing about writing your bio for speaking engagements is that you know the specific audience it should be tailored for.

So often we struggle with our LinkedIn/Twitter/Company bios because we are trying to be all things to all people.

To knock your speaking bio out of the park, learn all you can about the audience for the specific event or conference. Who has attended in the past? What was the most popular topic?

Uncover their needs (articulated or not), and tailor your bio messaging to demonstrate why you will be the speaker that’s forcing latecomers to stand in the back.
